Red light therapy panels have transitioned from high-end longevity clinics directly into home bedrooms. But to the uninitiated, sitting in front of a glowing red box can look a bit like science fiction.
Clinically referred to as photobiomodulation, this alternative therapy isn’t a gimmick; it is a scientifically verified method of using specific wavelengths of light to fuel cellular energy, reduce pain, and accelerate tissue repair.
Recharging Your Cellular Batteries
To understand how red light works, we have to look inside your mitochondria, the powerhouses of your cells. Your mitochondria use an enzyme called cytochrome c oxidase to process oxygen and create ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate), the universal energy currency your body uses to heal and function.
When your cells are stressed, injured, or aging, a molecule called nitric oxide binds to this enzyme, effectively blocking oxygen from entering the cell and stalling energy production.
